Description:

The mauresque ornament covers the entire display side of the plate in evenly-spaced arrangement. An armorial shield is seen in the middle. The plate by Nicolò Greco belongs to the tradition of diverse brass receptacles with related ornamentation, produced by metal craftsmen in the Mediterranean region for the Oriental and European market. Another plate signed by him is in the British Museum collection in London (MLA 1855.12-1.3). Since we know very little about the artist’s life— he was working in Rome in 1542 —an exact identification of the plate’s provenance is not possible.
