Everyday utensils used in the Fatimid period were made of cast copper alloy as this basin. The conical shape, which recalls late-antique vessels of similar shape made of precious metals, continued to be used in Islamic ceramics and metalwork after the 12th century. The decoration consists of a double row of reciprocating kufic inscriptions that express good wishes to the owner and is further adorned with scrolls and heart shapes.
