This volume is one half of a divided manuscript usually referred to as the Collection of Epics. These paintings belong to the half containing the Shahnama (‘Book of Kings’), which is today part of the collections of the Chester Beatty Library. The other half of the manuscript, which consists of shorter epics written in imitation of Firdausi’s Shahnama, is held by the British Library. None of the illustrations are original to the manuscript but instead were later added to it, probably about ten years after it was first produced.
