Description:

This exceptional example of a Kashan dish is decorated with a veiled woman riding an elephant. Moreover, it bears a signature which is possibly that of Muhammad ibn Abi Tahir, a famous Kashan potter of the pre-Mongol era, and head of a family who produced lustreware over three generations. The dish is dated AH Shawwal 611 (AD February 1214). The shape of this dish, standing on three harpy-shaped feet, is taken from a contemporary metalwork shape (perhaps an incense burner).
