The painting provides a glimpse of everyday street life, probably in Cairo. A tired water seller rests on a wall in front of a building entrance. The boy depicted is carrying on his back a large portable water jar similar to SM1996-219 whilst holding in his hand small drinking cups.
Ferraris was a renowned Orientalist painter, pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme, who encouraged him in 1885 to set off on a journey to Egypt with another famous Orientalist painter, Ludwig Deutsch.
