Description:

The dish, painted in brown lustre on a cream background, is deep with vertical sides and a reasonably wide brim, decorated with pod-shaped swirls in relief. The decoration consists of tiny spike-shaped elements and small daisies that alternate with bands of solid and grid-pattern lustre. The centre of the boss is decorated with an animal, probably a hare. The inside bears a highly stylised epigraphic motif. On the outside, in the centre, there is a 16-point radial motif surrounded by a series of medallions with stylised fern leaves.

This bowl is an example of the metallic lustre-painted ceramics produced in Valencia. Zoomorphic and phytomorphic motifs, along with geometric elements, decorate the surface of the piece.

How provenance was established:

The dish belongs to a broad group of items that first appeared in Valencia towards the end of the 9th / 15th century and were extensively influenced by Renaissance metalwork.
