Abbasid
Iraq.
This poly-lobed bowl is decorated with the stylised figure of an eagle with its wings outstretched, painted in solid lustre with the exception of a few details left uncoloured, such as the eye and the neck. It is surrounded by small dotted panels and the edge is decorated with semi-circles.
View Short DescriptionThe shape and decoration of this bowl are influenced by a combination of different styles and traditions. Its shape is related to early Sassanid metalwork, while its decoration is reminiscent of a style used in late Abbasid figurative ceramics.
Purchase.
The design of this piece derives from metallic prototypes of Sassanid origin via Chinese T’ang porcelain (618–906). The style used for the bird, however, is attributable to curvilinear stylisation typical of late Abbasid figurative ceramics.
