وصف:

يعتبر الصليب رمزاً دينياً في الديانة المسيحية. وتظهر أهمية الاعتقاد به من خلال قيام حاكم منطقة جوديا بصلب السيد المسيح على صليب خشبي كبير. منذ ذلك الحين، أصبح الصليب من الأدوات الأساسية المحبب استخدامها في الطقوس والمناسبات الدينية.

الصليب المعروض هنا مصنوع من البرونز، وحفرت على وجهيه دوائر صغيرة متحدة المركز. تدل الثقوب الثلاثة الصغيرة على الجزء الرأسي من الصليب على أنه كان مثبتاً على قطعة خشبية استخدمت لغايات طقوس كنائسية. الجزء العلوي من ذراع الصليب مكسور إلى قطعتين، وتم ترميمه حديثاً.

تكمن أهمية هذا الصليب في العثور عليه في كنيسة القديس اسطفان (ستيفن) في أم الرصاص. تم تبليط هذه الكنيسة بأرضية فسيفسائية في عام 138/756، وذلك حسب ما تشير إليه النقوش الموجودة على جانبي المذبح. وهذا الأمر يشير إلى وجود مجتمع مسيحي فعّال في أم الرصاص بعد ست سنوات من انتهاء الفترة الأموية ولمدة قرن خلال الحكم الإسلامي في المنطقة.

صليب برونزي، من الطراز اليوناني، عائد إلى كنيسة القديس اسطفان، في أم الرصاص، مُزخرف على الوجهين. ربما كان الصليب مُثبَّتاً على صندوق خشبي، بثلاثة مسامير حديدية، اثنان مازالا محفوظين على الذراع العمودية.

طريقة تأريخ القطعة وطريقة تحديد أصلها:

أرّخت القطعة استناداً إلى نقشين يونانيين في أرضية كنيسة القديس اسطفان، أحدهما يحمل التاريخ 721 م والآخر يحمل التاريخ 756 م.

طريقة اقتناء المتحف للقطعة:

تم اقتناء القطعة إثر العثور عليها أثناء الحفرية الأثرية التي أجريت عام 1986 من قبل معهد الفرنسيسكان(Studuim Biblicum Franciscanum) في أم الرصاص.

طريقة تحديد مكان صنع القطعة أو العثور عليها:

تم العثور على هذه القطعة في كنيسة القديس اسطفان في أم الرصاص، غير أن مكان صنعها غير معروف.

Aida Naghawy is an archaeologist and the Director of Jordan Archaeological Museum. She studied archaeology at the University of Jordan where she gained her MA. She was affiliated to the Jordanian Department of Antiquities from 1974 as a curator of Jordan Archaeological Museum. In 1981 she became inspector of Jerash antiquities and co-ordinator of the Jerash International Rehabilitation project. She was also head of the archaeological awareness section at the Department of Antiquities. Aida is the author of numerous publications on Islamic coins. She has carried out excavation work in Jerash and is the founder of Jerash Archaeological Museum and the Islamic Museum of the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs.

Ghada Al-Yousef is an archaeologist and the Director of the Friends of Archaeology Society in Jordan. She studied at the University of Jordan from where she received her BA and MA in Archaeology. In 1993 she undertook a course in the restoration and conservation of ancient mosaics held by the Italian government in Jordan. She was affiliated to the Jordanian Department of Antiquities from 1994 to 1997 as a trainee in the restoration of ancient mosaics and the production of modern mosaics at Madaba Mosaic School. In 1995 she opened her own gallery and workshop for producing mosaics. She was appointed as the Director of the Friends of Archaeology Society in 2001. She has carried out excavation work in Amman and Madaba.
