Description:

This facetted sheet metal jug is a typical example of the Khurasan school of metalwork. It has been hammered into shape, before having its body incised and partly silver-inlaid. The decorative scheme combines benedictory Arabic inscriptions with figural cartouches showing sphinxes – cosmic and solar symbols in Persian popular culture – and birds.
