FBQ.HH.668
Cedar Wood
Length: 30cm , Width: 27cm, Height: 25cm
Mughal
India
This Qur’an stand would elevate larger holy books to prevent direct contact with the unclean surface of the ground. The pigmented wood structure from India features deep floral carvings.
Mughal-style carvings with rows of florals and vines adorn the Qur’an stand in geometric precision. While Islamic woodwork in India remains widely understudied, the lobed arches of the legs remind of Mughal architecture. Furthermore, the woodwork of the Mughal Empire rarely bears inscriptions, hindering an accurate dating and study of clusters of pieces.
These stands still cradle Qur’ans in affluent homes, mosques, Islamic schools (madrasa), and in tombs for recitation and display purposes.
The date and origin were established in research-based comparison from an examination of material, colour, engraving and pattern.
