Description:

Ottoman tughras are calligraphic emblems of the sultan's authority and were included in all official documents, including firmans (royal decrees), endowment papers, correspondence, and coins. Used by the first Ottoman sultan in 1324, they later developed into a more complex form that was not easily read or copied. This example served as the monogram of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent (r. 1520–66). Its stylised form is an intricate calligraphic composition comprising the name and titles of the sultan, his father's name, and the phrase “the eternally victorious”. Its bold, gestural line contrasts with the delicate, swirling vine scroll illumination as ornamentation. This tughra served as the heading for a long, narrow document in scroll form, the first line of which is preserved in golden script at the bottom of the page.
