The candlestick was dedicated by the Mamluk sultan Qaytbay to the shrine at Medina in 1482. Monumental inscriptions whose letter-ends curve to form tongs enclosing small palmettes, occupy almost the entire height of the base. The sultan Qaytbay had the mosque of the Prophet restored in 1480 and offered to it at least five candlesticks, of which another two have survived and are now in Cairo.
