This plate is from George Sale’s translation of the Qur’an. This edition of Sale’s work was published in a two-volume work in 1825, by Thomas Tegg without the Preliminary Discourse or the Memoir of the Translator, which makes up a large part of Sale’s original translation of 1734. The 1734 edition was known to be the first English translation of the Qur’an from the original Arabic. This plate is the same as that in the 1734 edition, and consists of two depictions: ‘Plan of the Temple of Mecca’ and ‘View of the Temple of Mecca’. It has a key to the significant parts of the Haram and a note stating that the references on both the plan and the view show the same locations. This plan however is missing the signature of the original engraver A.Motte. Hand colour tinting is commonly seen in Tegg’s publishing, however it is rare to find this particular plate from Sale’s Koran detached and so finely coloured. It may have been removed, coloured and used as artwork in its own right.
The date and publication details are included within the book.
