Description:

The fabric, made of red, black and yellow-brown silk, is decorated with motifs embroidered with silver- and gold-plated copper wire woven into a cotton base. The basic decorative element consists of a large prayer niche (mihrab), at the centre of which, at the top, there hangs a mosque lamp. Above and beside it there are scrolls containing decorative epigraphic motifs. The background of the fabric, with the exclusion of the inside of the niche where there are naturalistic floral motifs, is decorated with arabesque elements consisting of intertwined palmettes of various shapes or half-palmettes surrounded by spirals.

This fabric, embroidered with metal thread and decorated with a prayer niche (mihrab), a large mosque lamp and epigraphic motifs, is typical of late Ottoman textile production.

The suggested dating and origin of the object are based on the decorative style, which relates to late Ottoman textile production (12th–13th / 18th–19th centuries).
