Aydin Oghullari

Mid-south of Aegean Turkey, known as Ionia in Antiquity

Sasa Bey, son-in-law of Menteşe [Menteshe] Bey, the founder of an emirate in southwest Anatolia [Turkey], took the Aydın region in AH 680 / AD 1282 and Birgi, Tire and Ayasuluğ (modern day Selçuk/ ancient Ephesus) in 703 / 1304 from the Byzantines. In 707 / 1308, Mübarizüddin Mehmed [Mubariz al-Din Muhammad] Bey, the commander of the Germiyan Emirate army, seized this territory from Sasa Bey and founded his own emirate. His capital was Birgi.
Mehmed Bey established a navy at Ayasuluğ and conquered the upper Izmir in 709 / 1310 and then the port of Izmir in 729 / 1329. Mehmed Bey divided the conquered lands among his sons: Umur Bey received Izmir, Ayasuluğ and Sultanhisar went to Hızır Bey, Ödemiş to İbrahim Bahadır Bey and Tire to Süleyman Bey. His youngest son İsa Bey stayed at Birgi with him.
Mehmed Bey died in 734 / 1334 and was succeeded by Umur Bey, who launched campaigns in Greece and the Aegean islands. He also conquered Alaşehir and the island of Chios. In 744 / 1344 the Latins captured the port of Izmir and Umur Bey died in an attempt to recapture it in 748 / 1348.
Umur Bey was succeeded by his brother Hızır Bey, who moved the capital to Ayasuluğ. He signed a treaty with the Latins agreeing to leave the port of Izmir to the Latins and to share the income from the port with them. This treaty weakened the power of the emirate.
İsa Bey succeeded Hızır Bey in 761 / 1360. He provided military support to the Ottoman Sultan Murad I for the Battle of Kosovo. When Bayezid I succeeded Murad I, İsa Bey joined other emirates in western Anatolia to oppose this succession. When Bayezid I conquered Alaşehir in 792 / 1390, İsa Bey surrendered to Ottoman rule.
Tamerlane [Timur-i Lang] reinstated the Aydin Emirate after his victory over Bayezid I at the Battle of Ankara in 804 / 1402. Musa Bey ascended the throne but died in 805 / 1403. A contest for the throne ended when Cüneyt Bey took power in 807 / 1405. The emirate fell to the Ottoman Sultan Murad II in 829 / 1426.
