The Popular and Religious Mudéjar Style
The Mudéjar style in Portugal
The popular and religious Mudéjar style in Portugal is distinctive, as certain decorative elements, such as crenellations and pinnacles, were incorporated into Gothic-style structures alongside exposed collar-beam ceilings decorated with vivid, multicoloured interlaced stars and crosses, or flat alfarje ceilings in the upper choirs decorated with wheels of eight- and sixteen-pointed stars.

In addition to the crenellated walls and the richly decorated wooden ceilings, Mudéjar builders in the Kingdom of Portugal used horseshoe arches for exterior gateways, such as the one in the Episcopal Palace in Coimbra, which appears to be entirely Islamic in origin.
