There were two main caravan routes for Muslims on pilgrimage to Mecca: the Egyptian route, which included Muslims journeying from Sub-Saharan and North Africa, and the Syrian, used by pilgrims travelling from the Eastern Provinces. The Syrian caravan often had to change course and move further east to avoid the Holy Land, due to the disruptions caused by the Crusades.
