Description:

Large plate with a broad flat base, curved sides and a narrow brim, painted in turquoise green, cobalt-blue and red lake in relief (Armenian bole) typically used with this type of dish. It consists of flowering stems that, like the central shoot with its blue campanulas, spring from a small bush with small alternating blue and red roses that is painted on the lower edge of the base of the dish. The flowers are dominated by three large peonies, tulips and hyacinths. The brim is decorated with the characteristic ‘wave-and-rock’ motif, highly stylised. The side is decorated with rose and palmette motifs that alternate between green and blue, with colour haloing.

This plate, a typical example of work from the factories of Iznik in the AH late 10th–early 11th / AD late 16th–early 17th centuries, is richly decorated with floral motifs.

How provenance was established:

Careful examination of the details and the unlobed border of the dish reveal that this piece was produced in Iznik workshops around the end of the 10th / 16th and the beginning of the 11th / 17th centuries.
