Turkey, Iznik
Beginning sometime in the Hegira 950s / AD 1540s Iznik potters introduced manganese purple, sage green and black to their palette, while their decorative repertoire continued to focus on floral designs such as pomegranates, rosettes, tulips and artichokes. The latter two motifs form the main decoration at the centre of this large dish, where they are depicted in blue and green, while the cavetto and rim bear green pomegranates alternating with blue sprays of leaves or else tulips.
Iznik wares with this specific color scheme, sage-green combined with more typical Iznik tones such as blue and turquoise, were produced for only a short period in the middle decades of the 16th century; the earliest dated example is the mosque lamp from Süleyman’s restoration of the Dome of the Rock (British Museum 1887,0516.1) dated Hegira 956 / AD 1549.
Collection of Dikran Kelekian (1867-1951) c. 1910. Collection of Maan Z. Madina (1926-2013), New York, until 2002 (sold to); LACMA, The Madina Collection of Islamic Art, gift of Camilla Chandler Frost.
The shape, technique, color scheme and decoration mark this dish as a product of Iznik.
